Washington, DC — Rep. Randy Fine (R-Fla.) is facing mounting calls for censure or resignation after posting on X that he would choose dogs over Muslims, drawing sharp bipartisan backlash.
Fine wrote Sunday, “If they force us to choose, the choice between dogs and Muslims is not a difficult one.” The comment prompted House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) to label Fine “a disgrace to the United States Congress” and call on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to take action. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said Fine “must be censured,” while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called the remark “one of the most disgusting statements” she has seen from an elected official.
A formal censure would require a House vote and could include removal from committee assignments.
Fine later posted a screenshot of a comment by activist Nerdeen Kiswani referencing dogs in New York City, saying his post was in response. Kiswani told NBC News her earlier remark was satire. Fine has continued responding to critics with altered Gadsden flag images featuring a puppy.
Criticism extended beyond Democrats. Megyn Kelly and Rasmussen Reports pollster Mark Mitchell also expressed disapproval, while conservative commentator Laura Loomer defended Fine.
