House Democrats released a report defending former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) against GOP allegations of witness tampering related to her contact with Jan. 6 witness Cassidy Hutchinson. Republicans, led by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), have urged an FBI investigation, claiming Cheney acted unethically.

The Democrats’ report highlights evidence, including text messages and a letter from Hutchinson’s attorney, showing Hutchinson fired her previous lawyer, Stefan Passantino, before reaching out to Cheney. Hutchinson’s current attorney stated she acted independently due to a perceived conflict of interest.

Cheney reportedly advised Hutchinson to secure independent counsel before offering additional testimony. Democrats called GOP claims “maliciously false,” emphasizing that Cheney’s actions were professional and did not shape Hutchinson’s testimony.

Loudermilk’s report criticized Cheney and the Jan. 6 panel as politicized, but Democrats dismissed the allegations as defamation and noted legal protections for Cheney under the Speech and Debate Clause.
