House Democrats are increasingly confronting demands from their base to reject political norms and adopt aggressive, even dangerous tactics in opposing Donald Trump. Axios interviewed over two dozen Democratic lawmakers who described a rising tide of anger, despair, and calls to “fight dirty” from constituents, many of whom now question institutional traditions and the rule of law.
One lawmaker reported voters saying “civility isn’t working” and calling for violence to “protect democracy.” Another recounted being told to “storm the White House.” Lawmakers say these intense demands often come from white, affluent liberals in suburban or urban districts.
Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.) said such pressure stems from misunderstanding the limited powers of the minority party in Congress. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) urged a return to constitutional principles, even as grassroots activists push for spectacle and confrontation.
An anonymous Democrat summarized the tension: “The expectations aren’t just unreal. They’re dangerous.”
