Democrat Sam Sutton has won a closely watched special election for New York’s State Senate District 22, defeating Republican attorney Nachman Caller and maintaining Democratic control of the Brooklyn-based seat, according to Decision Desk HQ.

The election was triggered by the resignation of conservative Democrat Simcha Felder, who previously caucused with Republicans and ran unopposed for years. Sutton’s victory comes despite the district voting for Donald Trump in 2024 and GOP hopes to flip the seat.

Sutton, a businessman and co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation, has deep ties to the district’s sizable Orthodox Jewish population. His campaign emphasized public safety, school funding, and clean energy.

Though Republican gains in conservative-leaning areas have been notable post-2024, Sutton’s win signals Democratic resilience in traditionally split districts.

District 22 includes parts of Brooklyn that skew socially conservative but also prioritize local community representation—factors that likely benefited Sutton.
