Democratic strategist David Axelrod condemned Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Friday for firing all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and replacing them with eight appointees — some of whom have spread vaccine misinformation.
“This is a genuine catastrophe in the making,” Axelrod posted on X. “Vaccines have eradicated diseases that ravaged mankind… Now one twisted ideologue in a position of power threatens to take us backward. God help us all.”
Kennedy defended his decision, calling the new ACIP slate “highly credentialed” and committed to “gold-standard science.” The revamped committee is set to meet June 25 to review the COVID-19 vaccine and the broader immunization schedule.
Former Surgeon General Jerome Adams also criticized the move, warning it “restricts access to a vital tool for saving lives” and ignores COVID-19’s ongoing toll.
Kennedy, who has long questioned vaccine safety, recently rescinded CDC recommendations for COVID shots in children and pregnant people. Critics say his changes risk worsening public distrust amid a nationwide measles outbreak.
