D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to halt its federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The legal action comes after Attorney General Pam Bondi attempted Thursday night to appoint an “emergency police commissioner,” a move the city rejected as unlawful.

“By illegally declaring a takeover of MPD, the Administration is abusing its temporary, limited authority under the law,” Schwalb wrote on X, calling the move “the gravest threat to Home Rule DC has ever faced.”

Schwalb said no president before Trump has used the Home Rule Act to seize control of MPD. He described the administration’s actions as “brazenly unlawful” and an effort to conduct a “hostile takeover” of the department.
