China on Thursday dismissed suggestions that it is actively negotiating a trade deal with the United States, directly contradicting President Trump, who has voiced confidence in reaching an agreement with Beijing.
Commerce Ministry spokesperson He Yadong said claims about ongoing trade negotiations are “groundless” and lack “factual basis.” He added that China remains open to talks, but only on the basis of “mutual respect” and “equality.”
Trump, speaking Wednesday, suggested the current 145% tariff on Chinese imports could be lowered through a future deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, though “it won’t be zero.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed optimism in private remarks, saying he anticipates a “de-escalation” in tensions.
Beijing has responded to Trump’s tariffs with a 125% duty on U.S. goods and has also limited exports of critical minerals. China called for the removal of all “unilateral tariffs” to resolve the conflict.
