Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a new level of trust between their countries during a meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, marking Modi’s first visit to China in seven years.
Xi said Beijing and Delhi should be “partners, not rivals,” while Modi noted there is now an “atmosphere of peace and stability” after years of tensions, including deadly 2020 border clashes. Modi also announced suspended flights between the two nations would resume, though no timeline was given.
The SCO summit, attended by over 20 world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, comes amid U.S. trade disputes. President Trump has imposed tariffs on Indian goods in response to Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, while Putin faces continuing sanctions threats over Ukraine. The meeting highlights shifting alliances as India moves closer to China against the backdrop of strained ties with Washington.
