Charleston, S.C. — Moderate Democrats are organizing early for the 2028 presidential race, aiming to prevent a liberal candidate such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) from leading the party’s ticket.
Third Way, a prominent center-left organization, convened hundreds of elected officials, strategists and donors this weekend for its “Winning the Middle” event. The group is advocating for a centrist nominee, arguing that progressive candidates have failed to flip battleground House seats.
Third Way President Jon Cowan criticized Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders-aligned groups, saying their political network has not expanded Democratic gains in competitive districts. Justice Democrats responded that their focus has been on challenging incumbents in safely Democratic seats rather than targeting Republicans.
The gathering reflects broader tensions within the Democratic Party following President Trump’s second-term victory. New center-left groups have urged moderation, while progressives argue that a stronger populist message is needed to energize working-class voters.
Upcoming midterm elections are expected to shape the party’s strategic direction heading into 2028.
