PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A 36-year-old Florida man missing since Valentine’s Day was found alive more than a week later trapped in shoulder-deep mud at an industrial site, authorities said.
Andrew Giddens was discovered on February 25 near a sand plant owned by Vulcan Materials Company after Deputy Derrick Holmes noticed his abandoned vehicle two days earlier. Holmes recognized the car from a prior 2023 trespassing report and contacted company officials to search the property while also initiating a missing persons investigation.
Family members told deputies they had not heard from Giddens since February 14 and said he had been struggling emotionally following a recent breakup. Vulcan employees ultimately located him stuck in unstable mud near a borrow pit. He was alert and able to speak, but rescuers required ladders, ropes, pallets, and backboards to extract him during a three-hour operation.
Authorities said Giddens had endured freezing temperatures and several days without food or water. He was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition but is expected to recover physically. Officials said no charges are being pursued due to mental health considerations.
