U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) announced Friday that migrant encounters along the southwest border in July dropped to their lowest level in four years. According to the CBP press release, there were 56,408 encounters last month, the lowest monthly total since September 2020.

The decrease follows President Biden’s June executive action aimed at reducing illegal border crossings during high-encounter periods. Acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller credited enhanced border security measures for the decline, noting that they have improved the ability to impose consequences for illegal entry. He also highlighted efforts to combat transnational criminal organizations and the recent record-breaking fentanyl seizure.

The announcement comes amid ongoing political debate over border security. A bipartisan border security bill has been rejected twice in the Senate within the past year. Former President Trump criticized the legislation in February, calling it a “Death Wish for The Republican Party” on Truth Social.
