The CBP (Customs and Border Protection) released its December update report Friday.  In the report, CBP states that the Southern Border experienced 302,034 encounters with CBP in December.  The report goes on to cite positive statistics saying that the government removed or returned 472,000 individuals between May to December of 2023. The report also says that the first two weeks of January saw a 50% decrease in southwest encounters but does not reference what benchmark statistic the 50% decrease applies to.

The report describes its initiatives to facilitate lawful trade and travel, promote economic security, eradicate forced labor from supply chains, and defend our nation’s agricultural system. The U.S. Border Patrol has undertaken significant efforts in recent years to expand its capacity to aid and rescue individuals in distress.

Critics of the government’s immigration policy say that CBP’s efforts to expand capacity are meant to streamline the practice of releasing migrants claiming asylum.  Moreover, critics find no mention of deterrence in the current immigration policy. Additionally, opponents believe the current immigration rate to be unsustainable and that there is insufficient capacity in the nation’s cities to house, educate, and provide adequate healthcare.

Proponents of the government’s immigration policy view immigration as a moral imperative and cite low employment rates and high demand for workers as justification for more immigration.  Moreover, immigration proponents maintain that fentanyl trafficking occurs at valid points of entry as opposed to unsupervised border areas, a claim that critics deny.

Recently, claims have arisen that former President Trump, known for his hardline immigration stance, does not actually want to solve the immigration problem so he can use the issue to run against President Biden. Even some Republicans, such as Senator Mitt Romney, have leveled this charge against President Trump.
