The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Tuesday, accusing it of unlawfully withholding millions in congressionally approved funding for refugee assistance.

The administration halted $65 million in allocated funds on Jan. 24, leaving USCCB with $13 million in unpaid reimbursements and $11.6 million owed to subrecipients. The funds support over 6,700 asylum-seekers in transitional care. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for D.C., names the State Department, the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, and the Department of Health and Human Services as defendants.

Vice President JD Vance previously criticized USCCB, accusing it of profiting from refugee resettlement. The lawsuit disputes this claim, stating USCCB spends more on asylum programs than it receives from the government. The legal action follows a separate lawsuit by 27 religious groups alleging the administration violated First Amendment rights by conducting immigration raids near places of worship.
