Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed Wednesday that his government is in talks with President Trump about joining the proposed $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense system, a U.S.-led program that would place weapons in space.
Trump said the system, expected to be fully operational by 2029, would use satellites and interceptors to detect and destroy missiles at all phases of flight. Carney called participation a good idea, noting Canada faces space-based threats in the “not-too-distant future.”
The United States and Canada are already partners in NORAD, but Carney warned that exclusion from the Golden Dome program could leave Canada unprotected from related decisions.
While supportive, Carney emphasized that final participation would be based on military evaluations, not negotiations. Trump added that Canada had reached out and would be expected to contribute its “fair share.”
The Pentagon has cited advanced missiles from China and Russia as key threats justifying the need for this new multilayered defense initiative.
