Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, was taken by ambulance to a Washington, DC hospital on Tuesday, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Noem was reportedly conscious and able to communicate with her security detail upon arrival.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that Noem was “alert” and recovering from the incident.

“Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. She is alert and recovering,” McLaughlin said in a statement.

Noem has been at the center of recent high-profile immigration enforcement efforts, including controversial actions in Los Angeles and a confrontation last week with Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA), who was forcibly removed from her press event.

The hospitalization comes amid heightened political tension and increased public scrutiny of Noem’s leadership at DHS.
