President Joe Biden’s approval rating remains severely underwater, just under five months before Americans vote on his reelection bid. On Monday, Biden recorded his lowest-ever mark in FiveThirtyEight’s weighted tracker, with a 37.4% approval rating. Polls show decreasing support among nonwhite voters, and some progressives criticize the White House over its response to Israel’s handling of the Gaza war following Hamas’ October 7 attack.

Biden’s approval plummeted after the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and has not recovered. His previous low was in July 2022, during a spike in gas prices. In contrast, former President Donald Trump’s approval rating has slightly increased since leaving office, with a current 41.6% approval rating according to FiveThirtyEight.

Both Biden and Trump remain unpopular, reflecting the hyperpartisan era. Gallup previously found Trump and Hillary Clinton were the least popular presidential candidates in its records dating back to 1956. Biden’s low approval puts him at risk in November. His recent quarter ended with the lowest approval rating in decades. Only one of four modern presidents with sub-50% approval at this point, Barack Obama, won reelection. Trump, with a higher approval in 2020, lost to Biden.
