On Wednesday, President Biden signed a bill that exempts semiconductor manufacturing facilities from environmental reviews, despite opposition from some Democrats and environmental advocates. The legislation applies to facilities receiving federal funding, aiming to expedite the development of key sectors, including green energy.

Critics argue that the exemption reduces opportunities for communities to raise concerns about hazardous chemicals like PFAS, which are linked to health risks, including cancer. Environmental groups urged Biden to veto the bill.

The bill passed the Senate unanimously last year and cleared the House with a 257-125 vote, despite resistance from some Democrats. Supporters, such as Rep. Scott Peters (D-Calif.), believe it will boost technological innovation and chip production in the U.S. The bill follows the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, which allocated $280 billion for the semiconductor industry.
