Mike Donilon, a longtime confidant of former President Joe Biden, was paid roughly $4 million to join the 2024 re-election campaign — a figure far above other senior aides, according to a new book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson. The revelation in Original Sin highlights both Donilon’s influence and the internal discord within the Biden campaign.
Biden reportedly insisted Donilon be paid whatever he wanted after the strategist hesitated to leave his White House post. Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon, by comparison, earned $300,000. The decision angered senior staff and deepened rifts between Biden’s core team and other campaign veterans.
Donilon is blamed by some Democrats for strategic missteps and shielding Biden from tough conversations about his reelection risks. The president’s inner circle has also faced criticism for profiting from a campaign many viewed as destined to fail.
Donilon denies any decline in Biden’s acuity and attributes such perceptions to media distortions.
