President Joe Biden revealed that pressure from Democratic lawmakers led him to abandon his 2024 presidential run. In a Sunday interview with CBS’s Robert Costa, Biden explained that Democratic colleagues feared his candidacy might harm their own campaigns, prompting them to urge him to step aside.
Biden maintained confidence in his ability to compete against former President Trump, citing polls that showed a close race. However, he acknowledged concerns that his health might overshadow the election, leading to distractions for any Democratic candidate.
While Biden didn’t name specific lawmakers, reports suggest prominent figures like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries were among those pushing for his withdrawal. Despite stepping down, Biden expressed his intention to campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has secured the Democratic nomination.
