President Joe Biden pledged one-time $770 payments to victims of California wildfires during a White House briefing. Nearly 6,000 survivors have registered for the program, with $5.1 million already distributed through FEMA’s Critical Needs Assistance Program, which began last week. The funds aim to help victims buy essentials like water, baby formula, and prescriptions.
Biden noted progress in wildfire containment: 14% in Pacific Palisades, 33% in Pasadena, and 100% in Ventura. Additionally, the federal government will fully cover California’s firefighting costs for 180 days.
Meanwhile, tension persists between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and President-elect Donald Trump. Trump criticized Newsom’s handling of the crisis, while Newsom expressed concern about potential withheld aid. Congressional Republicans are considering adding conditions to relief funding, which Democrats argue could set a harmful precedent.
