On Thursday, during his visit to Superior, Wisconsin, President Joe Biden announced a $5 billion funding initiative for major transportation projects across the United States. The aim of this announcement is to invest in overdue infrastructure projects, a key area where Biden aims to demonstrate progress, in contrast to former President Trump’s unfulfilled promises.

The funding is part of the infrastructure law passed in November 2021 and includes several significant projects. The largest project is a $1 billion plan to replace the Blatnik Bridge, which connects Superior, Wisconsin, to Duluth, Minnesota. The current bridge has weight restrictions and forces heavy trucks into long detours. The new bridge will increase capacity and add a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Other projects include a $600 million initiative to replace the earthquake-prone I-5 Bridge between Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon. The funding also covers $427 million to establish the first West Coast offshore wind terminal in California, $372 million for replacing the nearly 90-year-old Sagamore Bridge in Cape Cod, and $300 million for a new container terminal at the Port of New Orleans.

There are also other notable projects, such as a $95 million expansion of a 10-mile section of I-10 in Arizona, $142 million to repair the I-376 corridor in Pittsburgh, and $150 million to reconnect communities divided by the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York.

Biden’s infrastructure focus, which he referred to as an “infrastructure decade” during a previous visit to the Blatnik Bridge two years ago, has led to over $400 billion in funding for more than 40,000 projects to date. This move is seen as pivotal in the lead-up to the November election, where a rematch with Trump is anticipated.
