The Biden administration announced Friday an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, allowing them to renew work permits and deportation protections. The extensions will benefit approximately 234,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians, and 600,000 Venezuelans. TPS for El Salvador is extended through March 2026, while Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela are covered until October 2026.

The move comes as President-elect Donald Trump has signaled plans to reduce TPS and enforce stricter immigration rules. TPS designations can be revoked by the DHS secretary with 60 days’ notice. The Biden administration, however, declined to expand TPS eligibility for new arrivals despite pressure from advocates.

TPS immigrants include Salvadorans in the U.S. since 2001 and Venezuelans fleeing economic crisis and repression. Ukrainian TPS holders arrived during the 2022 Russian invasion.
