The Biden administration has voiced its disapproval of a provision in the recently signed $1.2 trillion spending package that restricts U.S. embassies from flying the LGBTQ+ Pride flag under certain conditions. Despite the bipartisan effort to avoid a government shutdown, this inclusion has sparked controversy due to its targeted nature against the LGBTQ+ community.

The White House emphasized that this measure, which prevents the use of Congressional funds to display any flag over Department of State facilities, was inappropriately added to a crucial government funding bill. The administration assures that this will not affect LGBTQI+ members’ service in embassies or their Pride celebrations, signaling an ongoing commitment to repeal the provision.

Critics, including civil rights groups, note that the restriction is limited and does not prevent the display of Pride flags in other contexts within embassy premises. The move reverses the Trump administration’s ban on such displays, reinstating a practice initiated under Obama’s presidency, reflecting the ongoing debate over LGBTQ+ rights within U.S. foreign policy and domestic legislation.
