Sen. Bernie Sanders has endorsed Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary, calling him the “best choice” to lead the city and “stand up to powerful corporate interests.”

Mamdani’s grassroots campaign includes proposals to build 200,000 affordable housing units, freeze rents, offer free public buses and childcare, expand mental health care, and create city-owned grocery stores. He aims to fund the platform by increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthiest 1% of New Yorkers.

Sanders’ endorsement follows that of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who urged voters to rank Mamdani first under the city’s ranked-choice system. Mamdani has also cross-endorsed fellow progressive candidates Brad Lander and Michael Blake.

Mamdani is polling second behind former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams is skipping the primary to run as an independent. Cuomo has earned endorsements from Michael Bloomberg and former Gov. David Paterson.

The New York Times editorial board recently opposed Mamdani’s candidacy, citing inexperience and likening his agenda to Bill de Blasio’s tenure.
