Luigi Mangione’s attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, criticized New York City officials for a highly publicized perp walk last week following Mangione’s extradition from Pennsylvania. Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, pleaded not guilty to state charges during a hearing Monday.
Friedman Agnifilo argued the perp walk was unnecessary and politically motivated, claiming Mangione was made a “spectacle” and treated as “political fodder.” The event, attended by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, featured heavily armed officers and substantial media coverage. Mangione, arrested after a manhunt in Altoona, Pennsylvania, had been in custody for over a week and waived extradition before being escorted in the event Friedman Agnifilo described as “perfectly choreographed.”
Mayor Adams defended his presence, stating his goal was to support law enforcement and send a clear message against violence. His press secretary, Kayla Altus, emphasized that public safety remains the mayor’s priority and denounced the glorification of violence online.
Mangione faces life imprisonment without parole if convicted on state charges. Federal charges, including murder using a firearm, could potentially lead to the death penalty.
