Arizona voters will decide in November whether to enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution. The Arizona secretary of state’s office confirmed Monday that 577,971 signatures were certified, surpassing the required number to put the measure on the ballot.

Arizona for Abortion Access, the coalition supporting the measure, celebrated the certification as the most signatures validated for a citizens initiative in state history. “This is a huge win for Arizona voters,” said campaign manager Cheryl Bruce.

The proposed amendment would allow abortions until a fetus can survive outside the womb, typically around 24 weeks, with exceptions for the mother’s life or health. It would also restrict the state from adopting laws that limit abortion access. Arizona currently bans abortions after 15 weeks, with certain exceptions.

Opponents argue the measure could lead to unregulated abortions, while supporters believe it safeguards abortion rights from being overturned by courts or legislators.
