The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a request to release Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant charged with fabricating a bribery scheme involving President Biden’s family. The court upheld the lower court’s decision, citing Smirnov as a flight risk.
Smirnov’s lawyers had sought his release for glaucoma surgery and argued that his detention hinders trial preparation. They plan to continue fighting for his release.
Smirnov, arrested in February, is accused of falsely claiming that Burisma executives paid the Bidens $5 million each around 2015. He has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors revealed Smirnov’s extensive contact with Russian intelligence officials. Smirnov had been an informant for over a decade when he made the allegations about the Bidens in June 2020.
