An Israeli strike on the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood in Rafah, targeting a humanitarian zone, resulted in at least 45 fatalities. The area, filled with tents, had been designated by Israel’s military as a shelter for displaced Palestinians amidst the conflict with Hamas. The Israeli military asserts the strike eliminated two senior Hamas leaders.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned the attack as “an indefensible atrocity,” accusing it of defying President Biden’s explicit warnings and the International Court of Justice’s ceasefire directive. She urged the U.S. to halt military aid to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the incident as a “tragic mistake” and has called for a thorough investigation. This strike follows closely on the heels of an ICJ order to cease operations in Rafah, a significant and uninvaded settlement in Gaza.

The White House expressed profound sorrow over the incident, emphasizing Israel’s duty to protect civilians while pursuing Hamas. Simultaneously, French President Emmanuel Macron seized the moment to reiterate his call for an immediate ceasefire, stressing the absence of safe zones in Rafah for Palestinian civilians.

As the Israeli military’s presence in Rafah grows, warnings from the Biden administration appear to have been overlooked. With over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents seeking refuge in Rafah and a vast majority displaced, the onset of famine looms as access to humanitarian aid becomes increasingly dire.
