An anti-Trump Republican faction, Republican Voters Against Trump, is setting aside $50 million to prevent Donald Trump from securing a second term. Spearheaded by Republican strategist Sarah Longwell, who has been openly critical of Trump, the campaign aims to dissuade moderate Republicans and Republican-leaning independents in key swing states from supporting him. Utilizing testimonial videos from former Trump supporters, the initiative seeks to highlight the reasons behind their decision to withdraw their support.
The campaign will feature these testimonials across a variety of media platforms, including TV, streaming services, billboards, radio, and digital channels, focusing on battleground states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The strategy echoes the group’s 2020 efforts, which they believe played a crucial role in Joe Biden’s victory. By expanding its reach and demographic focus in 2024, the group hopes to recreate the anti-Trump coalition that previously contributed to Trump’s defeat.
Sarah Longwell emphasized the importance of engaging former Republicans and Republican-leaning voters with credible voices who can articulate the dangers they perceive in allowing Trump another term. The testimonials predominantly focus on the disapproval of Trump’s actions, such as his response to the January 6 Capitol riot, rather than endorsing Joe Biden or advocating for his reelection. This approach aims to establish a narrative that, despite any grievances with Biden’s presidency, Trump’s perceived threats to democracy render him an unsuitable choice for the presidency.
