U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has reported a 36% increase in egg smuggling over the past year, with a 54% spike along the Texas border, as Americans try to bring in cheaper eggs from Mexico and Canada.
Egg smuggling is prohibited due to health concerns and lack of inspection, with officials warning of potential disease spread. Despite this, Mexico’s eggs cost around $2 per dozen, while U.S. prices peaked at $8 earlier this month before dropping significantly.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced a $1 billion plan last month to combat high egg prices and contain the bird flu outbreak. The Trump administration is also exploring foreign egg imports to stabilize supply.
Rollins reported egg prices have dropped nearly $2 since the administration’s biosafety strategy began. “We’re focused on bringing egg prices down and controlling the avian flu,” Rollins said, noting a $1.85 decrease in average prices within the past two weeks.
