A record number of Americans are applying for British citizenship, with more than 6,600 applications submitted in the year ending March 2025 — a 30% increase from the previous 12 months, according to the U.K. Home Office.

The rise appears closely tied to political shifts in the U.S., with application spikes following Donald Trump’s election in November and his return to the White House in January. The first quarter of 2025 saw 1,931 applications — the most ever recorded in a single quarter.

This trend mirrors a similar surge after Trump’s first election in 2016.

The U.K. government, meanwhile, continues to emphasize tighter migration controls. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated this month that while immigration contributes positively, “it must be properly controlled and managed.”

While many applicants are from South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the rise in U.S. citizens seeking U.K. residency is noteworthy amid Trump’s hardline immigration policies, including exceptions like refugee status granted to white Afrikaners from South Africa.

In response to broader migration trends, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson credited Trump’s leadership: “America is back – companies and countries… are clamoring to invest in the United States… That’s something all Americans can celebrate.”
