The Trump administration announced Tuesday that Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia since 2021, has been released and is returning to the U.S. Fogel was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2022 for possessing medical marijuana, and the Biden administration had previously deemed him “wrongfully detained.”
National security adviser Mike Waltz credited President Trump and adviser Steve Witkoff for negotiating Fogel’s release, calling it a “show of good faith from the Russians” and a step toward ending the war in Ukraine. The White House has not disclosed details of the exchange.
Fogel’s sister, Anne Fogel, emphasized his urgent medical needs, saying, “He’s 63 years old with a long list of medical conditions … he doesn’t belong there.”
