Washington, D.C. — Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) was escorted out of the House chamber Tuesday night after holding up a protest sign during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, sparking a confrontation with several Republican lawmakers.

As Trump entered the chamber and began speaking, Green stood and displayed a sign reading, “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” The message referenced a recent Truth Social post from Trump’s account that critics said depicted former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

Multiple Republican lawmakers approached Green during the disruption. Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) attempted to grab the sign, while House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) also tried to pull it down. Mullin and Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) later positioned themselves between Green and the president before a House sergeant-at-arms staffer escorted Green from the chamber.

Green briefly stopped while exiting and again raised the sign toward Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), who also attempted to take it.

Afterward, Green told reporters he wanted Trump to see the message and said he was “making a point to the president.” Republican leaders indicated they are considering whether to pursue a censure resolution.
