President Donald Trump on Monday appeared to ease off threats to unilaterally deploy the military to liberal-run cities, saying it would be better for state and local officials to request federal help.

“I hate to barge in on a city and then be treated horribly by corrupt politicians and bad politicians,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He added, “In a certain way we should wait to be asked.”

The remarks came just before Trump signed new executive orders aimed at crime in Washington, D.C., including ending cashless bail, increasing penalties for flag desecration, and creating specialized National Guard units for public order.

Earlier this month, Trump took control of D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and deployed hundreds of Guard troops, despite local crime data showing violent crime was declining. He has since suggested Chicago could be next, but Illinois officials have strongly opposed any federal intervention.

Trump has frequently criticized Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D), but acknowledged Monday that any further crackdowns may require cooperation from state leaders.
