Dallas, Texas — An Afghan immigrant who previously worked with U.S. military forces died at a Texas hospital shortly after being taken into federal immigration custody, according to officials and family members.
Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, 41, died Saturday at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, one day after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Authorities said he was arrested during a targeted enforcement action and did not report any prior medical issues at the time of processing.
According to ICE, Paktyawal later complained of chest pain and shortness of breath while being held at a Dallas field office. He was transported to the hospital, where he was treated overnight. Officials said he was eating breakfast the following morning when medical staff noticed severe swelling and attempted life-saving measures before he died.
His family disputed that he had any health issues, describing him as “a strong and healthy man.” Paktyawal had resettled in the United States after assisting U.S. forces during the Afghanistan war and was living in the Dallas area while his asylum case remained pending.
ICE said the death is under investigation. The agency noted prior arrests for fraud and theft, while advocacy groups highlighted his background as a refugee and military partner.
Federal data shows deaths in ICE custody have increased alongside expanded detention capacity in recent years.
