The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Trump administration, seeking access to migrants held at a facility in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

“By hurrying immigrants off to a remote island cut off from lawyers, family, and the rest of the world, the Trump administration is sending its clearest signal yet that the rule of law means nothing to it,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

The administration is moving forward with plans to expand Guantánamo Bay’s capacity to hold up to 30,000 migrants being deported from the U.S. The facility has previously housed military prisoners, including al Qaeda operatives linked to 9/11. The first group of migrants arrived last week.

The lawsuit argues detainees have a right to legal counsel and challenges the government’s legal authority for the transfers. It also alleges violations of First and Fifth Amendment rights. Legal service organizations are co-plaintiffs, citing restrictions on communication with detainees.
