In 2023, the United States experienced a significant rise in abortion numbers, exceeding 1 million for the first time since 2012, marking a departure from previous years of decline. This increase coincides with the first full year after the reversal of Roe v. Wade, which has led to heightened restrictions on abortion access in numerous states. According to the Guttmacher Institute, this rise reflects a shift towards easier access to abortions in certain areas, despite widespread restrictions.
Notably, the percentage of abortions performed via medication climbed to 63% in 2023, up from 53% in 2020. This change comes after the Food and Drug Administration approved the mail shipment of mifepristone in 2021. Furthermore, financial support for individuals seeking abortions has also increased, with the National Network of Abortion Funds assisting over 100,000 individuals in 2023.
The data revealed a 25% increase in abortions in states without bans from 2020 to 2023, with bordering states seeing even higher demand. New Mexico, for example, reported a more than 200% increase in abortion numbers, attributed to its proximity to Texas, where abortion is heavily restricted.
As the 2024 election approaches, abortion remains a critical political issue. Former President Donald Trump mentioned on Fox News that he is considering a stance on abortion that aims to satisfy both sides of the debate. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris has reaffirmed her support for abortion rights, highlighting the ongoing national divide over this issue.
