A Quinnipiac University poll revealed that 51% of U.S. voters oppose President-elect Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China, with only 38% supporting the proposal. Trump’s threatened tariffs include a 25% tax on all imports from Canada and Mexico and increases on Chinese goods.
Opposition to the plan spans party lines, with 89% of Democrats, 76% of Republicans, and 53% of independents against the tariffs. However, more independents (34%) support the proposal compared to Republicans (12%) and Democrats (7%).
Trump’s tariff threats have drawn criticism from global leaders and trade experts, who warn of economic fallout. Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned earlier this week, citing the proposed tariffs in her resignation letter.
The Quinnipiac poll, conducted Dec. 12-16 among 924 registered voters, has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
