A coalition of 12 states filed a lawsuit Wednesday challenging President Trump‘s sweeping tariffs, arguing they were imposed without legal authority and have destabilized the U.S. economy. The case was filed in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York City.
The states — Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Vermont — claim Trump violated the Constitution by unilaterally setting import taxes through executive actions and social media posts. The lawsuit also argues the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the president to impose tariffs under the circumstances cited.
“The president does not have the power to raise taxes on a whim,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James. Arizona AG Kris Mayes called the policy “insane” and “economically reckless.”
The suit follows Trump’s tariff hikes, including a 125% levy on China after it retaliated against earlier tariffs. The states are seeking to block further implementation of the trade measures.
