The Senate passed a six-month spending bill on Friday, just hours before a government shutdown, with 10 Democrats joining Republicans to clear the 60-vote threshold needed to advance the measure.
The final vote was 54-46, with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) being the only Republican to oppose the bill. The 10 Democrats who voted in favor of advancing the bill were:
- Chuck Schumer (NY) (Voted to Pass the bill)
- Dick Durbin (IL)
- Catherine Cortez Masto (NV)
- Maggie Hassan (NH)
- John Fetterman (PA) (Voted to Pass the Bill)
- Gary Peters (MI)
- Brian Schatz (HI)
- Kirsten Gillibrand (NY)
- Jeanne Shaheen (NH)
- Angus King (ME) (an independent who caucuses with Democrats)
The spending bill, which funds the government through September, trims $13 billion from non-defense programs while boosting defense spending by $6 billion. It also eliminates specific funding directives, giving the Trump administration broader discretion over how funds are allocated.
Schumer’s decision to support the bill sparked outrage from House Democrats and progressives, who wanted a 30-day funding extension to renegotiate spending levels. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called it a “slap in the face”, while Schumer argued that a shutdown would give Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) even more power.
