A bipartisan framework for a gun safety bill, released Sunday by Senate negotiators, includes 10 Republicans — the number needed to overcome any filibuster.

The release of broad parameters for a deal, which come after back-to-back shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y., gun safety legislation, marks a significant breakthrough for the talks. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has offered his endorsement and vowed to put the measure on the floor. But first, negotiators will have to finish the hard work of translating their accord into legislation.

The deal includes grants for states to implement red flag laws, new spending for mental health treatment and school security and extra scrutiny for gun buyers under the age of 21.
