CHICAGO, Ill. — A 26-year-old woman is in critical condition after a man set her on fire aboard a Chicago Transit Authority Blue Line train Monday night, according to police. The attack happened around 9:25 p.m. near the Clark/Lake station after the woman and a man believed to be about 45 years old got into a verbal dispute.
Authorities say the argument escalated when the man poured an unidentified liquid onto the woman and set it ablaze. As the train stopped, the suspect fled. Witnesses reported seeing the woman stumble out of the train and collapse on the platform before bystanders helped extinguish the flames.
The victim was taken to Stroger Hospital with severe burns, and police say she remains in critical condition. One witness told Fox 32 she appeared to be “in a lot of pain,” while another told NBC Chicago that medics attempted CPR before rushing her away.
Service on the Blue Line was temporarily suspended but resumed around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The suspect has not been located, and investigators are reviewing surveillance footage.
The attack comes less than a year after a similar incident in New York City, where 57-year-old Debrina Kawam was fatally set on fire aboard a subway train. In that case, the suspect was later arrested and charged with murder and arson.
