Racine, Wisconsin — A Wisconsin jury has convicted a conservative activist of election fraud and identity theft after he requested ballots in the names of public officials without their consent. The case centers on actions taken to test the state’s voting system amid ongoing debates over election integrity.

Harry Wait was found guilty of two misdemeanor election fraud charges and one felony identity theft charge following a two-day trial. Prosecutors said Wait requested absentee ballots belonging to Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Democratic Racine Mayor Cory Mason without authorization. He was acquitted of a second identity theft count.

Wait, an election denier who has promoted claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent, admitted he requested the ballots to demonstrate potential weaknesses in Wisconsin’s voter registration system. He previously said he expected legal consequences and maintained he was acting in the public interest.

After the verdict, Wait said he would repeat his actions, stating he believed the system “failed.” He now faces up to six years in prison for the felony charge, along with potential jail time for the misdemeanors. A sentencing date has not been set.

The case follows a separate 2024 conviction of a Milwaukee election official who also used false identities to obtain absentee ballots while claiming to test system vulnerabilities.
