St. Paul, Minnesota — Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday publicly invited President Donald Trump to visit Minnesota, framing the gesture as a challenge to what he described as escalating political theater surrounding federal immigration enforcement in the state.

Walz issued the invitation in a statement posted on social media, urging Trump to witness Minnesotans’ “values in action” rather than intensifying confrontations between federal authorities and local leaders. The remarks came as the Department of Justice served subpoenas to Walz and other state officials as part of an investigation into alleged interference with immigration enforcement, a probe the governor dismissed as a partisan distraction.

According to Walz, the federal government’s focus should be on restoring trust and accountability, not what he characterized as legal intimidation of public officials. His comments coincided with Trump’s remarks marking the anniversary of his inauguration, during which the president highlighted Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations by displaying mugshots of immigrants convicted of violent crimes.

Tensions between Minnesota and the administration have grown following weeks of unrest in Minneapolis after an ICE officer fatally shot Renee Good earlier this month. Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have both called for federal agents to withdraw, with Walz labeling the deployment an “occupation.” The situation intensified further after anti-ICE protesters disrupted a church service in St. Paul, prompting a Justice Department investigation.

Trump has defended the federal presence as part of “Operation Metro Surge,” described by DHS as its largest immigration operation to date, and has suggested invoking the Insurrection Act. Walz, however, has urged the president to prioritize accountability for Good’s death rather than expanding federal enforcement actions.
