Austin, Texas — A total of 24 candidates have filed to run for governor of Texas, including incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, who is seeking a fourth term, according to filings reviewed by The Center Square.

The field includes 11 Republicans, 12 Democrats, and one Independent, though several candidates have already withdrawn or been disqualified. Abbott, the longest-serving governor in state history, enters the race with a campaign war chest exceeding $100 million and the backing of most major Republican endorsements. He is widely expected to secure the GOP nomination and remain favored in the general election.

Abbott faces 10 Republican challengers, most of whom have limited political profiles and minimal fundraising. Among them are former military members, local law enforcement officials, and candidates affiliated with professional associations. None are considered top-tier challengers.

On the Democratic side, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa of Austin is viewed as the leading contender. A former school board member and attorney, Hinojosa has served in the Texas House since 2016 and is known for her opposition to school choice policies and advocacy for increased public education funding. She is expected to win the Democratic primary after several rivals exited the race.

Texas has not elected a Democratic governor since Ann Richards left office in 1995. Republicans have dominated statewide executive offices for decades, with Abbott positioned as the clear frontrunner in November barring an unforeseen shift in the political landscape.
