Donald Trump’s recently signed $3.4 trillion tax and spending package eliminates key clean energy incentives, potentially costing Arizona billions in investment and tens of thousands of jobs. The package ends tax credits for solar and wind technologies, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency upgrades, all initially expanded under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

The Arizona Commerce Authority estimates the rollback may cost the state $58 billion in investments and 69,000 jobs. “That is real capital and construction jobs that are just walking out the door,” said Advanced Energy United’s Michael Barrio.

In an executive order issued shortly after signing the bill, Trump directed agencies to repeal or modify solar and wind tax credits. Arizonans now have until year-end to claim the 30% solar tax credit, originally set to expire in 2036.

Clean energy projects have already been canceled or delayed. EV maker Nikola cut 855 jobs in February per reports, and solar panel maker Meyer Burger closed its Goodyear factory. A $1 billion battery plant and a major decarbonization project were both scrapped, citing federal policy uncertainty and DOE grant withdrawals.

Advocates fear increased energy costs as demand rises, and warn Arizona risks falling behind in renewable capacity.
