Minneapolis, Minnesota — President Donald Trump on Thursday publicly threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota as protests continue to escalate following another federal-agent-involved shooting in Minneapolis.

Trump wrote on his social media platform that if “the corrupt politicians of Minnesota” do not curb what he described as attacks by “professional agitators and insurrectionists” on Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, he would “institute the INSURRECTION ACT” to bring in military forces and “quickly put an end” to the unrest. The Insurrection Act is a rarely used federal law that allows the president to deploy U.S. military forces domestically to suppress civil disorder.

The threat comes amid heightened tensions in Minneapolis, where protests have intensified following a federal officer shooting a Venezuelan man in the leg during an enforcement operation — an incident that followed the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE agent earlier in the month. Federal authorities say the latest shooting occurred after the man and others attacked the officer, but the increased presence of federal agents and clashes with protesters have drawn widespread criticism from local leaders.

Local officials, including Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have said the situation is “unsustainable” and have urged calm while condemning federal tactics. Minnesota and its largest cities have filed lawsuits seeking to halt the federal immigration crackdown and operations seen as infringing on public safety and constitutional rights.

Trump’s latest threat underscores deepening federal-state conflict as unrest continues in Minneapolis and broader debates expand over immigration enforcement and the use of federal authority in domestic disturbances.
