The government shutdown reached its third week Tuesday as the U.S. Senate reconvened without progress toward a funding deal. Lawmakers again failed to advance a short-term spending bill, while President Donald Trump signaled deeper cuts and layoffs.

“We are closing up programs that are Democratic programs … and we’re not going to let them come back,” Trump said, adding that Republican priorities would remain funded. The White House said it will publish a list Friday of federal projects being eliminated.

The Office of Management and Budget announced it is preparing for widespread “Reductions in Force,” or layoffs, across several departments. Labor unions representing federal workers have filed lawsuits to block the job cuts, with a hearing scheduled Wednesday.

The Senate’s eighth vote on the GOP-backed stopgap bill failed 49–45, as Democrats continue to demand a bipartisan agreement on expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits. Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) have refused to negotiate, accusing Democrats of causing “the Schumer Shutdown.”
