New York, New York — President Donald Trump on Saturday endorsed Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in the New York gubernatorial race, moving quickly to consolidate Republican support just one day after Rep. Elise Stefanik suspended her campaign and announced she would not seek reelection to Congress.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump called Blakeman a “FANTASTIC guy” and gave him his “Complete and Total Endorsement,” praising his close alignment with the MAGA movement and his cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Trump highlighted Blakeman’s work with ICE, Border Patrol, and local law enforcement, framing the endorsement around border security, public safety, and law-and-order messaging.
Blakeman entered the Republican primary earlier this month, a move that intensified intraparty tensions in a state where Republicans already face long odds statewide. His decision came despite Trump previously endorsing him for reelection as Nassau County executive, which some saw as a signal to remain out of the governor’s race. That calculus changed after Stefanik’s exit, clearing a major obstacle in the GOP field.
Stefanik said she would have “overwhelmingly won” the primary but chose to step aside to avoid a prolonged intraparty fight in a heavily Democratic state. Her departure followed a turbulent year that included leaving House Republican leadership for a short-lived U.N. ambassador nomination before returning to Congress without a leadership role.
With Trump’s endorsement, Blakeman now emerges as the clear Republican front-runner, though any GOP nominee will face a steep challenge in New York’s general election.
