NEW YORK CITY, New York — Longtime conservative lawyer turned Trump critic George Conway formally launched a Democratic campaign Tuesday for New York’s 12th Congressional District, entering a crowded primary to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler.

Conway’s announcement came on the five-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and featured a sharply worded campaign video accusing President Donald Trump of corruption, criminal behavior, and abuse of federal power. Conway said his years opposing Trump have prepared him to confront what he described as an administration operating without regard for democratic norms or the rule of law.

A former partner at the elite law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, Conway spent more than two decades practicing law in New York and has emphasized his long-standing ties to the district. Once a Republican, Conway became one of Trump’s most vocal critics during Trump’s first presidency and later co-founded the anti-Trump Lincoln Project. He divorced former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway in 2023 after years of highly public political disagreement.

Conway joins a large and competitive Democratic primary field that includes Jack Schlossberg, New York State Assembly members Micah Lasher and Alex Bores, journalists, activists, attorneys, and nonprofit leaders. The district, which covers much of Manhattan, voted overwhelmingly Democratic in recent elections, making the primary effectively determinative.

Conway is the second high-profile former Republican to run as a Democrat this year, betting that opposition to Trump outweighs past partisan identity among Democratic voters.
